Auto Pick & Pack 856 ASN

From Warehouse Event to Compliant ASN

Visit Product Page

The 856 Advance Shipping Notice is the document retailers use to prepare their receiving docks for incoming freight, and it is also the document that triggers the most chargebacks. Our Auto Pick & Pack product eliminates manual ASN creation by generating the 856 directly from WMS pick-pack-ship events. When a carton is sealed on the warehouse floor, the system reads the carton contents, applies the correct SSCC-18 carton identifier, and constructs the 856 with the proper hierarchical structure: shipment level, order level, pack level, and item level.

Before transmission, a pre-send validation engine checks the document against the receiving retailer's specific compliance rule set. Walmart requires carton-level detail with specific pack structures. Target mandates a different hierarchy. Home Depot has its own label format requirements. The validation engine catches compliance gaps before the document leaves your system, not after the retailer rejects it. The result: on-time ASN delivery rates above 99.5% and chargeback reductions of 80% or more within the first quarter of deployment.

Barcode Shipping Labels

GS1-128 Compliant, Retailer-Ready

Major retailers require GS1-128 (formerly UCC-128) barcode labels on every carton and pallet arriving at their distribution centers. A label with the wrong Application Identifier, a missing serial number, or a non-scannable barcode can result in the entire shipment being refused at the dock, with the supplier paying return freight plus a penalty. Our Barcode Shipping Label product generates compliant labels automatically at the pack station, using the same data that drives the 856 ASN.

The product supports all major retailer label formats including Walmart, Lowe's, Costco, Menards, and Kroger, each with their own layout, human-readable text placement, and AI-00, AI-02, AI-37, AI-420 requirements. Output is generated as ZPL for direct printing to Zebra, SATO, and Honeywell thermal printers, or as PDF for network-attached printers. Each label's SSCC-18 serial number is synchronized with the 856 pack-level reference, so the retailer's scan at receiving matches your ASN exactly. Our platform is certified for Zebra Technologies printers and scanners, ensuring seamless label printing and dock-side scanning workflows.

Customised EDI Solutions

Built for Your Exact Workflow

Not every trading partner relationship fits neatly into ANSI X12 or EDIFACT standards. Some partners use proprietary document formats, hybrid structures that combine EDI segments with XML payloads, or conditional workflows that chain multiple document types with business logic. Our Customised EDI Solutions product is designed for these scenarios. We build the document type, the mapping, the validation rules, and the workflow logic from the ground up, tailored to your exact requirements.

Custom documents are treated identically to standard EDI within the platform. They are monitored in real time, retried on failure, included in compliance reporting, and visible in the same dashboards as your X12 and EDIFACT transactions. We have built custom solutions for automotive suppliers who need AIAG-specific formats, healthcare organizations requiring HIPAA-compliant 837/835 variants, and international trade partners using EDIFACT subsets with country-specific segments. If you can describe the document structure, we can build, test, and deploy it.

ERP & Accounting Integration

Bidirectional, Real-Time Sync

Visit Product Page

EDI documents are only useful if they reach your ERP, accounting system, or WMS without manual re-entry. Our ERP and Accounting Integration product builds direct, bidirectional connectors between EDI and your business systems. An incoming purchase order (850) flows into your ERP as a sales order. An outgoing invoice (810) is generated from your accounting system's billing module and transmitted to the trading partner. No copy-paste, no CSV imports, no middleware delays.

We support over 200 business systems including SAP S/4HANA, Oracle Fusion, Microsoft Dynamics BC, NetSuite, QuickBooks, Sage 100, Epicor P21, Shopify, and 200+ others. For multi-system environments, the product supports split routing: e-commerce orders flow to Shopify, financial postings go to QuickBooks, and warehouse instructions route to your WMS, all from the same EDI document. For logistics-focused clients, we also connect with Trimble Kuebix TMS for real-time freight tracking alongside EDI document exchange.

Flat File Integration

CSV, Tab, Fixed-Width Translation

Visit Product Page

Many trading partners, especially in logistics, automotive, and international trade, do not use standard X12 or EDIFACT. They send purchase orders as CSV files, shipping instructions as tab-delimited text, or inventory updates as fixed-width flat files. Our Flat File Integration product parses any of these formats, maps each field to the corresponding EDI element, and generates a compliant standard document that the rest of your supply chain can consume.

The product works bidirectionally. Incoming flat files are translated to EDI for downstream partners who require standard formats. Outgoing EDI documents are translated to flat files for internal systems that cannot parse X12. We support delimiter configuration (comma, tab, pipe, semicolon), header-row mapping, multi-line record types, and position-based fixed-width parsing. This is particularly valuable for businesses transitioning from legacy systems that communicate exclusively through file exchange, providing a bridge to modern EDI without a full system rewrite.

Packaging Slip

Always Matches the 856

Visit Product Page

A packaging slip that does not match the 856 ASN is a compliance violation waiting to happen. Retailers compare the physical slip inside the carton to the electronic ASN they received, and any discrepancy in item count, UPC, or carton ID triggers a chargeback. Our Packaging Slip product eliminates this risk by generating the slip from the same pick-pack-ship data source as the 856 ASN. Both documents read from the same event record, so the contents, quantities, and identifiers are identical by design.

The slip is formatted to the specific retailer's layout requirements. Walmart requires a specific header format with department and PO numbers. Target wants the DC number prominently displayed. Costco has its own item-description format. The product auto-selects the correct template based on the trading partner and prints the slip at the pack station alongside the barcode label, so both go on the carton in one motion.

REST API Integration

JSON, Webhooks, SDKs

Visit Product Page

Modern applications need programmatic access to EDI functionality, not a web portal. Our REST API Integration product exposes the full Cogential IT platform through JSON-based REST endpoints. Your developers can submit EDI documents, retrieve inbound transactions, query delivery status, manage trading partner configurations, and pull compliance reports, all through authenticated API calls. We provide a complete OpenAPI 3.0 specification, SDKs in JavaScript, Python, and C#, and a sandbox environment for development and testing.

The API supports webhook callbacks, so your application receives real-time notifications when a trading partner acknowledges a document (997), rejects a submission, or sends an inbound transaction. This eliminates polling and enables event-driven architectures. For businesses running Shopify, Amazon Vendor Central, or custom e-commerce platforms, the REST API lets you trigger EDI transactions directly from your storefront without touching the EDI layer. OAuth 2.0 and API key authentication are both supported, with rate limiting that scales to enterprise volumes.

SOAP Integration

WSDL, WS-Security, Legacy

Visit Product Page

Many enterprise systems, especially older versions of SAP, Oracle EBS, and healthcare platforms built on HL7 messaging, still communicate exclusively through SOAP web services. Our SOAP Integration product provides WSDL-based connectors that expose EDI functionality through standard SOAP operations, so these legacy systems can send and receive EDI documents without middleware or custom development.

We support both SOAP 1.1 and 1.2, WS-Security for message-level encryption and signing, and mutual TLS for transport-level authentication. The SOAP interface runs alongside the REST API on the same platform, so modern applications use REST while legacy systems use SOAP. This is particularly valuable for organizations with mixed infrastructure: a new microservice can submit orders via REST, while a 15-year-old SAP system retrieves the same orders through SOAP, and both interact with the same EDI pipeline. We provide WSDL files, sample requests, and integration documentation for each connector.

FAQ

Real Questions From Operations & IT Teams

Answers to the questions we hear most from warehouse managers, IT directors, and supply chain leads evaluating our products.

Our warehouse team manually types 856 ASN data into a web portal and we get chargebacks for errors. How does auto pick & pack eliminate this?

The Auto Pick & Pack 856 ASN product generates the 856 document directly from your WMS pick-pack-ship events. When a carton is sealed on the warehouse floor, the system reads the carton contents, applies SSCC-18 labels, and constructs the 856 with correct hierarchical structure (shipment, order, pack, item). The document is then validated against the receiving retailer's compliance rule set and transmitted automatically. Manual data entry is eliminated entirely, which is the root cause of most chargebacks.

Our retailer requires GS1-128 labels but our current label printer only supports Code 128. Do we need new hardware?

No. GS1-128 is a data standard that uses the Code 128 symbology as its barcode carrier. Your existing Code 128 printer is hardware-compatible. Our Barcode Shipping Label product generates the correct GS1-128 data structure with proper Application Identifiers, human-readable text, and retailer-specific label layouts. The output is sent to your existing thermal printer via ZPL or PDF. We support Zebra, SATO, Honeywell, and all major industrial printer brands.

We have a custom-built ERP that no off-the-shelf EDI product supports. Can Cogential IT build a connector for us?

Yes. Roughly 30% of our ERP integration work involves custom-built systems. We connect through direct database access, file-based exchange, or custom API endpoints. Our integration architect assesses your system architecture during the discovery phase and recommends the least invasive approach. We have built connectors for bespoke systems running on SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and even legacy AS/400 environments. We never require you to modify your ERP source code.

Our trading partner sends EDI documents as flat files, not X12. Can your flat file integration translate these?

Yes. Our Flat File Integration product handles CSV, tab-delimited, pipe-delimited, and fixed-width flat file formats. We parse the incoming file, map each field to the corresponding EDI element, and generate a compliant X12 or EDIFACT document. The same product works in reverse: incoming EDI documents are translated to flat files that your downstream systems can consume. This is especially useful for partners in logistics, automotive, and international trade.

Our developers want to trigger EDI transactions programmatically. Do you offer an API?

Yes. Our REST API Integration product provides JSON-based endpoints for submitting EDI documents, retrieving inbound documents, querying transaction status, and managing trading partner configurations. We provide full OpenAPI 3.0 specification, SDKs in JavaScript, Python, and C#, and a sandbox environment for development. The API supports webhook callbacks so your application receives real-time notifications when documents are delivered or rejected by the trading partner.

We still have a legacy system that only communicates via SOAP web services. Is SOAP still supported?

Yes. Our SOAP Integration product provides WSDL-based web service connectors that expose EDI functionality through standard SOAP operations. This is designed for legacy enterprise systems, older versions of SAP and Oracle, and healthcare platforms built on HL7 and SOAP messaging. We support both SOAP 1.1 and 1.2, WS-Security, and mutual TLS authentication. The SOAP interface can run alongside REST API on the same platform.

Walmart rejected our ASN because the packaging slip did not match the 856 carton detail. How does your packaging slip product prevent mismatches?

Our Packaging Slip product generates the slip from the same data source as the 856 ASN. Both documents read from the same pick-pack-ship event record, so the carton contents, item quantities, and UPC codes are identical by design. There is no manual copy-paste step where mismatches can occur. The slip is formatted to the specific retailer's layout requirements (Walmart, Target, Home Depot each have different formats) and includes SSCC-18 carton IDs that match the 856 pack-level references.

We need a custom EDI document type that is not in the X12 or EDIFACT standard. Can you build it?

Yes. Our Customised EDI Solutions product is built for exactly this scenario. Whether you need a proprietary document format for a specific trading partner, a hybrid document combining EDI and XML elements, or a custom workflow that chains multiple document types with conditional logic, we design and build it from the ground up. The custom document is treated identically to standard EDI within the platform: it is monitored, retried on failure, and included in compliance reporting.

We use Shopify for e-commerce and QuickBooks for accounting. Can your products connect EDI to both simultaneously?

Yes. Our ERP and Accounting Integration product supports multi-system connectivity. EDI purchase orders can flow into Shopify as orders, while the corresponding invoices flow into QuickBooks as billing records. Each system receives only the data it needs, in the format it expects. We support over 200 business systems and the integration is bidirectional, so status updates from either system flow back through EDI to the trading partner.

What is the setup timeline for deploying all eight products for a new client?

For a standard implementation, the full eight-product suite is deployed in 3 to 5 business days. The auto pick & pack and barcode label products are typically live within 24 hours since they connect to existing WMS data. ERP integration takes 2 to 3 days for standard platforms. API and SOAP connectors are provisioned within 1 day. Custom solutions and flat file mappings depend on file format complexity but are usually complete within 48 hours. We run end-to-end certification testing across all products before go-live.

Our warehouse runs AutoStore for automated retrieval and Cin7 for inventory. Can your products connect EDI to both?

Yes. Our ERP integration product connects to AutoStore for automated goods-to-person retrieval, triggering pick events from incoming 850 purchase orders. Simultaneously, inventory changes sync to Cin7 for real-time stock visibility across all sales channels. When the 856 ASN is generated by our auto pick & pack product, it automatically reflects the exact carton contents from AutoStore and updates Cin7 inventory in one seamless flow.
